In this module, we’ll be looking at how to develop materials for ESP. You have already spent a few moments considering the viewpoints of some of the experts from the field. We will now examine the principle areas of concern for the ESP materials-writer: real-world tasks, authentic materials, vocabulary and ultimately the need to maximize opportunities for learners to improve language performance in their given professional environment.

As we go through the module, examples of activities will be taken from the fields of medical communications, (doctorpatient communication), management and marketing to illustrate the ideas presented. I will then summarize by providing a simple but adaptable framework to help you designyour own ESP materials regardless of discipline. You will also find a guide to highlight the different steps involved in producing your own ESP materials, as well as some final recommendations.
