Four Footed Folk or the Children of the Farm and Forest

Four Footed Folk, or the Children of Farm and Forest, was published in 1914 by Whitman Publishing Company. Written by Elizabeth Gordon and illustrated in a singularly charming manner by Laurine Stout.

Elizabeth had a rather droll sense of humor and a rather uncanny ability to capture an animal's nature in a 4-line ditty.

Stout's illustrations are delightful -- very accurate renderings of the critters, even when they are dressed like people. And her illustrations range from an Angora cat to a jackal to an armadillo to a sloth. It's a pretty amazing range. I wish I could run a photo of every page. All the illustrations are very detailed and clever; every time I turned the page I had a new favorite.

This gem is very rare, and would be a prize item in anyone's collection.
